How To Service Your HVAC On Your Own

Having your HVAC unit serviced regularly should be at the top of your home maintenance list. It is an important component of your home, and depending on where you live, whether it is a cold weather or warm weather climate, it can really be an issue if it isn’t working properly. It can seem intimidating to dive into something that is unknown to you, but we have pulled together some simple tips for how to take the best care of your HVAC unit to help keep energy costs down, prevent extensive damage, and to make sure that you have a working HVAC unit year round.

Clean the Condenser

Your condenser is the unit that stands outside of your house. Sometimes it is a box shape and sometimes it is a cylinder. First and foremost, you need to cut the power source by unplugging it. Failure to do this could not only cause harm to you, but it could also cause damage to your condenser. Next, remove the cover grill and using an old paint brush, a small broom, or a shop vacuum with the brush attachment, remove as much debris as possible, taking care with the delicate fins. Next, using a hose, spray down the condenser coils, the fins, and the grill. If any of the fins are bent or out of place, use a fin comb (available at your local hardware store) to straighten them. Next, unscrew the top grille and carefully remove the fan, making sure to not put unneeded stress on the electrical wires. Remove any leaves or debris that may have gotten trapped inside of the fan and wipe down the blades of the fan. Using the hose, spray the fins from the inside and then replace the fan. Plug the unit back into the power source and set your house thermostat to ‘cool’ so the compressor comes on. After about 10 minutes, feel the insulated tube. It should feel cool. The un-insulated tube should feel warm.

Clean the Inside Unit

Again, make sure to turn off the power source to your furnace, and then pull out the filter. If there is any buildup on it, you should replace it immediately to help your system run better with less effort. Next, remove the access panels and vacuum out any dust. If there are lubrication ports, drop in 5 drops of electric motor oil. Make sure that any pipes or hoses are clean, free of debris, and appear undamaged. Replace the access panels and you’re good to go!

In the event that you are unable or uncomfortable doing any of these tasks, we suggest that you contact a professional. Things like replacing tubing or the refrigerant can be big jobs and if done improperly, they can cause a lot of damage to your unit.
