Donate Before Packing
Lots of people get into the huge rut of throwing things into boxes that they have no intention of keeping. But if you can declutter and donate anything you don’t plan on using in your new home, you’ll have less boxes to put on that moving truck! Take this process in two parts. Before you even begin packing, walk through every room in your house with a box and toss in anything that you have no intention of ever using. The second step comes when you are actually packing boxes to be moved. As you pack, have a second box that is reserved for donate items. A lot of charities will offer free pick up if you have a large load, so a day or two before you move, schedule them to haul off all your unwanted junk.
Clean As You Go
It is easy to think that you’ll just clean all in one fell swoop, but you will save a lot of time if you clean each room and area as you pack it up. Wipe every surface as you clear it and dust the bottom of your furniture before it gets loaded into the truck. This will minimize the amount of old dust that you track into your new home. As each room is packed, wipe down the window sills, vacuum the floors, making sure to get the dust bunnies in the corners, and pile the boxes and furniture that are going to the new house in one corner of the room.
Pack Smart
We are all guilty of giving up and cramming as much into one box as we can. But nothing is more frustrating than finding the can opener in with a pile of office papers. Pack by room and then also by category. Labeling each box well so that you can easily find what you’re looking for. Resist the urge to pack every book you own into one large box. Pack these into small, manageable boxes. And if you are a book hoarder, pack each room’s books in separate boxes. You’ll have a better idea of where things belong.
All in all, packing is hard no matter how savvy you are. But if you can keep yourself organized, the transition can be a lot less painful.
